“Cosmos: A Spacetime Odyssey” has been a terrific educational and thought-provoking resource. It is precisely the kind of show that television needs.
However, ratings have dropped on the show, the original series only aired for one season and, as of March, host Neil deGrasse Tyson said he had no plans to return for a second season, citing how much filming the show took out of him.
To be blunt, that is a damned shame. Is there something we do not know about, though?
Yesterday on Facebook, the official “Cosmos” page posted this ad:
As you will notice, the ad claims that the next episode of the series is the “season finale” and not the series finale.
Update: Cosmos posted this on Facebook tonight:
This could be an
overlooked typo or (upon closer inspection, the page switched from referring it to the end of the show and to the end of the season multiple times over the last few days) a last-ditch attempt for a ratings grab, but it certainly gives hope to those of us who love the show.
If I was to guess, I would say that Fox is considering bringing the show back contingent upon the return of Tyson or a host who can somehow fill his shoes.
So, here is a preemptive request to Neil deGrasse Tyson: Please, please, please, for the sake of humanity, come back and make a second season of “Cosmos: A Spacetime Odyssey.”
