A Nod to the Warriors

Donald Sterling, bag of douche

Amid the Donald Sterling whirlwind, the Golden State Warriors prepared to face the Los Angeles Clippers tonight.

The incredibly racist Sterling, who was set to receive a lifetime achievement award from the NAACP for some reason, was banned for life from the NBA and fined the maximum amount allowed by the league, $2.5 million, for the comments he made.

Prior to the announcement of the ban, the Clippers players silently protested Sterling by wearing their practice jerseys inside out.

The sentiment has been echoed around the league in various ways. However, the most blatant and potentially effective statement was set to be made tonight by the Golden State Warriors.

From the Mercury News:

The Warriors were going to go through pre-game warm-ups and take part in the national anthem and starting line-up introductions. They were going to take the floor for the jump ball, dapping up the Clippers players as is customary before games.

Then once the ball was in the air, they were just going to walk off. All 15 of them.

“It would have been our only chance to make a statement in front of the biggest audience that we weren’t going to accept anything but the maximum punishment,” Curry said. “We would deal with the consequences later but we were not going to play.”

Kudos to the Warriors players — lead by Stephen Curry, David Lee, Jermaine O’Neal and Draymond Green — for planning such bold statement during an important playoff game in a tied series.

Fortunately, the league reacted swiftly enough by banning Sterling so that the Warriors will not need to see their plan through, or so it would seem. We will find out soon.
